The (totally imaginary) danger here is that history tends to suggest that when you take elements of well-loved bands and combine them into some sort of mythical super-band, the end result is seldom as satisfying as one would initially hope. See: Audioslave, Velvet Revolver. I can only think of a couple of times where it's worked out (definitely Fugazi, maybe The Highwaymen).

For the sake of playing along, though, I'd stick Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe (Basement Jaxx) in a room with Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters) and Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips). The result might or might not be great, but it would certainly be different.

Or, for really different, David Bowie with Richard James (Aphex Twin).

Ideal rock band:

Vocals: Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam)
Guitar: Jack White (The White Stripes)
Guitar: Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains)
Bass: Les Claypool (Primus)
Drums: Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)
Keyboards: Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater)
Other: Loreena McKennitt's touring band

Maybe I could get Mark Lanegan, Josh Homme, Tom Morello, Flea, Dave Grohl, Ray Manzarek, and John Paul Jones, respectively, to sit in with them sometimes. :-)

Beatles songs:

1. Come Together.
2. Let It Be
3. Something
