Understand the *words*? Maybe not. But…
Niall and “Nonna” (my mother) were at the cottage for the first time in a quite a while. He made a beeline for Sebastian (cat).
“I love Sebastian!” he said to me. Nonna and he sat on the setee-thingy, Niall watching Sebastian. “Does he understand our language?” he asked.
Nonna said, “Well, he probably knows a few words. Like his name.”
“And ‘time for bed’,” I added.
Niall: “Does he understand ‘I love you’?”
Joshua: [heart melts]
Sebastian: [hops up]
Niall: “I love you, Sebastian.” He starts to tap-tap-tap on Sebastian’s head. Sebastian starts marking Niall’s leg with his chin glands.
Nonna: “That’s the way he asks to be loved,” she explains.
Joshua: “Scratch behind his ears,” I offered. He tried, then Nonna showed him how a little bit better. When Niall left, he gave Sebastian a good-night hug.
