When buying products from GoDaddy, always choose, initially, the smallest-possible duration or unit size. Then wait for them to offer you a special price for a longer term via a checkbox. This will not only be lower than the smallest-possible unit pro-rated, it will be lower than the price you would have gotten by choosing that duration or size in the first place. Make sure you use the checkbox they offer you.
Yes, it’s slimy, but all of GoDaddy is slimy. People don’t use them because they’re classy. They used them because they’re bloody cheap. So if you don’t mind feeling like you have to delouse, go ahead and game them back.

I stopped using GoDaddy years ago. Two reasons. First and worst: they accused my client, and ME, of spamming. Threatened to pull the plug on his domain, with absolutely no proof. I report spammers every day of my life, and there is no way in hell I’d ever spam. This happened TWICE to the same client, and we left.
Secondly, I read more than once that the owner, “Bob,” is a right winger.

I’m having some more fun-and-exciting stuff with GoDaddy, in trying to leave them. It is almost impossible. So many manual steps per domain. They put options in hard-to-find places, then double- and triple-check with you to confirm that yuo’re leaving. I got fed up and sent an angry email. I used the word “fucking” in it. Seemed appropriate. They — for real — told me they’d stop helping me transfer my domains away from their company if I didn’t watch my language.
I’m documenting this all. I’m going to the Better Business Bureau. I’m tired of being abused by a company I am paying to provide me a service.
