When I was around 10 years old, all of my friends had a pet, but I didn’t. I kept telling my parents how much I wanted a dog…and they said no. On Christmas of that year, my parents got me a hamster. It was only 2006 when they got me it. I named him Elmo.

Last night, he was running in his wheel. He loved his wheel, he went in it every night.

I woke up this morning and walked over to his cage to pick him up like I did every morning, then I realized something very bad had happened. My dad gets up at 6:00 every morning and it was about 6:45 when I noticed what had happened. I ran up the stairs crying and went to my dad saying “Dad! ELmo…he…he’s dead.” My dad told me everything would be okay, we went back downstairs to my room and my dad anylyzed what had happened while my mom just hugged me while I cried and told me that everything would be fine.

We later found out that when Elmo was running in his wheel, he tripped up and got his head caught between the bar of the wheel and the legs of the wheel that held it up. I went to school that day and told my friends what had happened.

After school that day, I took a shovel and a box that had Elmo’s body in it down to the beach and dug a hole there where I buried him and put rocks shaped as a cross over where I had buried him.

I will never forget my first hamster and he will always stay in my heart. I just hope that he’ll be okay without his foster parent ( me ) with him.
